Grandmas in Action

Grandmas (and Grandpas) for Charter Schools joined over 600 parents, teachers, community leaders and students to parade down State Street to submit applications for the Brighter Choice Charter Middle Schools to the Charter School Insitute. They started with a rally on the New York State Capitol steps with Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith.

Grandmas for Charter Schools attended a public hearing in support of a new charter applications for the Brighter Choice Charter Middle School for Boys and the Brighter Choice Charter Middle School for Girls and the extension of the Achievement Academy Charter School’s charter. They provided public comment and supported administrators and students.

Grandmas for Charter Schools joined parents, ministers, community leaders and school administrators to attend the Albany Common Council meeting — in opposition to a proposed non-binding anti-charter resolution. They provided public comment and provided a strong presence in the chambers.

Grandmas (and Grandpas) for Charter Schools joined 2,250 parents, teachers, community leaders, and charter school students at The Palace Theater for the premier screening of Academy Award Winner Davis Guggenheim's feature film Waiting for Superman which documents the anxious journey of families waiting to win the education lottery, allowing their children the opportunity to attend a better performing public school than their local neighborhood public school.

Grandmas for Charter Schools supported the ladies of Albany Leadership Charter High School for Girls at the Albany School Board meeting at Albany High School. The ladies attended the meeting to voice their concern that the Albany School Board did not provide the full per pupil fundaing as mandated under law to this newly opened charter high school.

Grandmas for Charter Schools attended a series of community budget meetings sponsored by the Albany School District. They inquired where was the Charter School Funding located in the School District's proposed budget. District staff was unable to show or identify the line item in their budget proposal.

Grandmas for Charter Schools joined forces with the Albany African American Clergy for Empowerment and charter school parents to attend the Albany School Board's community roundtable meeting at Pine Hills Elementary School to appeal to the Albany School Board to stop illegally withholding $4.8 million from Albany's charter schools.

Grandmas & Grandpas for Charters School teamed up with friends & families of Albany Community Charter School and Brighter Choice Charter School for Girls as well as with members of the Albany African American Clergy for Empowerment and community leaders to attend the Albany School Board Meeting at Albany High School. During public comment period, charter school proponents spoke out passionately asking for the Albany School Board to stop illegally withholding $4.8 million from Albany's charter schools.

Grandmas & Grandpas for Charter Schools accompanied scholars and parents from Green Tech Charter High School for Boys to attend the Albany School Board's monthly meeting at TOAST Elementary School. The Green Tech Scholars provided emotional public comment on the injustice they are experiencing due to a lack of funding. As a cohesive academic community of students and faculty, they spoke of the impact of the Albany School Board's decision to illegally withhold over $600,000 of their academic investment.

Grandmas for Charter Schools were joined by community friends for Grandmas in the Park summer picnic. While enjoying the beauty of summer allowing their grandchildren to hula hoop, jump rope, and play in park, Grandmas for Charters leisurely reflected on the charter school community and the need for equal treatment among all of Albany’s public schools.
